Osheen Gupta

I’m a multidisciplinary artist, visual art communicator and a Graphics Illustrator currently based in Bangalore, India. My works often instill a dynamic with me and my surroundings which duly become a part of my creation. I strive to make the projects that I undertake meaningful, as I attempt to weave a connection through my work with its audience.

So far I have attempted to delve into the world of mural making, graphic design, installation setup, a wide range of research, painting media, community-driven projects and only wish to keep growing with my sensitivity to the world around me, or the world as I see it.

S.O.S. - Public art Mural at Chickpete Metro Station, Bengaluru, 2018

Chickpet’s history along with the weaving past and present of Cottonpet, Nagarathpet and Cubbonpet, outlines a rather interwoven amalgamation of a blurred-past of guilds and artisans coming together and slowly vanquishing from the picture; as the interdependence of communities, as that of Devangas; (from genealogy of yarn into fabric) has been unbridled from the fabric of one huge umbrella of textile production, in some ways.

With the coming of the newly mechanized Powerloom clusters, the producer-customer relationship has taken center stage while the handloom craft as an occupation, is becoming austere.

The majority of the weavers start their business with the self-finance. They don’t possess adequate supply of finance to modernize their power looms which is necessary for greater productivity and better quality of fabric.

The abandoned templates near Chickpete, became the primary area of my muse, which led to the building up of the narrative for my piece.

Slender Loris, Mural, Dhanvantri Road, 2016

Slender Loris, creatures known as Kadapappa among locals in Karnataka, indigenous to Bangalore, are getting endangered because of a major threat of habitat destruction vividly seen in virtual media as a popular cause, and due to certain industrialization ‘assets’ like steel flyovers in Bangalore. This piece was a take off towards better awareness about these nocturnal creatures and their safety in regards to measures that can be taken in favour of the local fauna.

Cut along the dotted line, Mural, Dhanvantri Road

This work is about marks that stretch. Some remain visible and some are covered under the arduous layers of a journey. Some are plugged to be removed when they really live in our skin as a part of our being. This work suggests that we cut through the stigma, be comfortable in our own skin and embrace everything about scars and marks from skin that come from stretches; much like a metaphor for growth with all its highs and lows.

Rock & Scissors, Mural, Dhanvantri Road

This work is a take off towards the changing art climate of a space named Dhanvantri Road in Bengaluru, with the shifting roles and positions that public art holds in a space, cutting through and replacing the old imageries on facades with the new.
